The winter was half-over by the time he could walk on his foot again. We were down to fried eel and damper by this time and the dogs were definitely eating better than we were. We’d been at Broken-foot Camp for just under eight weeks and we would have to move on soon to stay eating. As a matter of fact I suspected I was losing weight from not enough to eat. My pants were getting loose.

We made it to the Te Pua hut the first day and had to do a starve for another few days because we’d overdone it on Uncle Hec’s foot. When we got to the Tauwharana hut we finally found some food — flour, rice, powdered milk, instant mashed potato, and half a tin of golden syrup. There was a notice on the wall. I read it out.

To Hector William Faulkner, of Apopo Valley Road, Gisborne County: You are required to present yourself and Richard Morehu Baker at the nearest police station immediately. If you have failed to comply with this order within fourteen days of June 30th, you will be deemed to be a fugitive from the law and a warrant will be issued for your immediate arrest.
